proPSI Amsterdam cancelled

The board of directors of Rexpro GmbH, an alliance between Het Portaal Uitgevers (PromZ) and Reed Exhibitions (PSI), has decided to cancel the upcoming proPSI. This European trade fair for the promotional products sector would have been held in Amsterdam from 23 through 25 August 2011.

John Swaab (Het Portaal Uitgevers) and Michael Freter (PSI) regret having had to make this decision. The most important reason behind it was that that certain objectives, specifically those for quality, would not have been met. ‘It looked as if the trade fair as a whole was not going to satisfy our criteria for quality. A major factor in this is the current economic situation,’ said John Swaab and Michael Freter.

‘We are very grateful to the companies and organisations that have supported pro (later proPSI) since it began. But pro was contending with difficult conditions right from its start in 2008: first the financial crisis and then the economic crisis. Unfortunately, pro was launched at an ill-fated period of time.

We are convinced that the idea of holding a second opportunity for European interaction at the beginning of the last quarter of the year, when suppliers and distributors have a lot of news to share, is still a good idea. For this reason, we do not rule out the possibility of reviving proPSI in better times,’ said John Swaab and Michael Freter.

For more information:

Good prospects for the promotional products market: Market survey during proPSI provides evidence of growth

Economic prospects for the European promotional products industry are brightening: Since the beginning of 2010 the economic situation has noticeably improved for distributors, agencies and textile processors. This is evident from a representative survey conducted by an independent trade fair and market research company during the proPSI trade fair held in Amsterdam from 25 to 27 August. The results emphasize that there has been steady growth since the beginning of the year and that expectations of trade visitors regarding the industry‘s future development are positive.

80 percent of proPSI visitors currently see their company experiencing a slight to strong upward trend or a stable situation. A view held by only 71 percent of interviewees at a survey taken during the Düsseldorf PSI in January 2010. Expectations regarding future economic development are more optimistic than at the beginning of the year. A slight or strong recovery of orders was expected by as many as almost 50 percent in January, at proPSI already by close to 60 percent. In the textile processing segment, almost 70 percent of companies expect an increase. At the same time the percentage of trade visitors holding a more pessimistic view of the future has also sunk. Whereas at the beginning of the year 24 percent still expected a slight to definite downward trend, that number had shrunk to just 16 percent by August.

Close to half of the trade visitors (43 percent) came to proPSI in Amsterdam with concrete intentions to invest. 45 percent of these plan expenditures exceeding 100,000 euros, 17 percent plan to invest more than one million euro.

proPSI proves a viable trade show in the pre-Christmas business

With a broad range of products and services, quality trade visitors and good customer contacts, proPSI - held for the first time as a cooperative venture of PSI and Pro Exhibitions & Publishers- proved to be a new viable trade show for the European promotional products industry. That is the conclusion that can be drawn at the close of the three-day event in the Amsterdam RAI Exhibitions Centre.

Visitors
A total of 3,478 trade visitors, of whom every second came from abroad, travelled to Amsterdam to view the range of products and services from the 178 exhibitor companies from the promotional products industry. Although the number of visitors remained below the expectations expressed in the run-up to the trade show by the organisers who had originally counted on more than 5,000 visitors, the conclusions drawn by the majority of exhibitors are positive overall. Praise for the quality of the contacts and optimism regarding the year-end business is the prevailing opinion at the close of proPSI, which was held specifically with a view to the Christmas business just beginning, and open also to non PSI members.

"proPSI aims at complementing PSI Düsseldorf in a meaningful way by offering another meeting place for the industry during the second half of the year, with the strongest possible international character", PSI managing Director Michael Freter said. An aim which proPSI has definitely achieved: the fact that EPPA and IPPAG combined their meetings with the trade show demonstrates that proPSI is appreciated as an international industry platform. The British association, bpma, and the Russian association, IPSA, were represented with stands of their own, and both a British and a Scandinavian pavilion were part of the show.

A varied range of products and services was on display, with the spectrum ranging from high-value presents to give-aways. Textiles in particular were strongly represented. But exhibitors offering machines for a range of application techniques for advertising content were also present. An impressive choice of electronic products proved that this product segment continues to grow steadily in importance. At the same time, a large and varied range of the classic items in the paper and stationery segment was also on display.

Awards
PF Concept, Mid Ocean Brands and macma had a special reason to celebrate: during proPSI they were awarded the title of "Supplier of the year" by an independent expert jury.

"In view of the current economic situation our trade show cooperation got off to a good start. We have to give the trade show time to develop, the demand definitely exists", says John Swaab of Pro Exhibitions & Publishers b.v.. Michael Freter also emphasises: "The vote of the exhibitors is clear: keep going and get better. Only one fifth of the companies do not want to take part in proPSI in 2011."

Very keen to commit again next year

The British Pavilion worked very well again at Pro/PSI, with 14 UK suppliers supporting the event. The show attracted many sizeable buyers and some of the enquiries generated by UK companies were substantial, including an 80,000 diary request.

A number of the suppliers, including I Name It, The Logo Lollilop, & Hainenko, even took orders from the show. The Pavilion, supported by Sourcing City and endorsed by the BPMA, has proven to be a popular overseas collaboration, with many of the suppliers commenting how easy it was for them to exhibit.

New exhibitor Pod Packaging, who generated over 210 enquiries, was initially unsure about coming and found the show an excellent way to break out into Europe. MD Mark Glanville commented "As a relatively small company the pavilion concept was cost effective and the BPMA and Sourcing City helped create a real community among the suppliers. We are very keen to commit again next year”.

Gordon Glenister, Director General of the bpma, who ran one of the conference sessions was quick to praise the event. “The bpma has a strong mandate to help UK suppliers expand into Europe and Pro is just one of the important events we are supporting. I was delighted to see how well some great products are being received on the continent”

Source: www.sourcingcity.co.uk

Blikvanger is already exhibiting for the third time in Amsterdam. One of the products they will be showing in Amsterdam will be the logoloop®.

logoloop®: advanced origami
With the logoloop® Blikvanger has succeeded for the first time ever in transforming the most different silhouette forms of logos, products or symbols into a 3D pamphlet that offers unlimited folding options. Software developed especially for the purpose projects each desired shape in a computer simulation, in order to determine the cut and folding places and identify possible weak spots. Then a laser precision cut-out is created. Nearly all conventional printing techniques are possible for the customisation, whereby water-soluble paints are used. The production process is certified according to EQM 9001:2008.

Due to its form and the fascination of the folding mechanism, the logoloop® attracts more attention for its playful attributes than as a pamphlet, so the recipient often keeps it. This in turn ensures a sustainable presence of the advertising message in the target group's environment.
SUITSUIT® transforms your dull grey suitcase into a mobile billboard.

It's a sure sight during every holiday season. Rows of travellers, tired after their trip, somewhat anxiously waiting by the luggage belts, trying to identify their suitcase among the countless identical blue, black or grey luggage pieces. God forbid your suitcase got lost, or that someone mistakes yours for his and takes off with all your belongings! What a nightmare!

But now the accessory brand SUITSUIT® has devised the ideal solution. It's a unique elastic suitcase cover that easily converts any dull grey suitcase into an instantly recognisable promotional tool that provides you with no less than two square metres of promotional exposure.

It is like a mobile 'billboard' with a much greater reach than the many traditional promotional media at airports, bus terminals and train stations. It brings your customer's brand to the attention of tens of thousands of potential customers, and is transported to all corners of the globe.

Besides making your brand stand out, the cover also protects the suitcase against dirt and small damages and ensures it stay firmly and safely shut during the trip. The cover is moreover much eco-friendlier that the single-use plastic foil used to seal suitcases at airports, which is discarded once you reach your destination. That's a waste of money and detrimental to the environment.

SUITSUIT® suitcase covers fit on almost every trolley (2 wheels) and spinner (4 wheels) with a height of between 65 and 80 centimeters.

ABOUT SUITSUIT®
SUITSUIT® is a young organisation established in early 2008, with a clear mission: to be the world's number one brand in innovative and fashionable travel accessories.
proPSI 2010: Autumn Meeting of the Promotional Products Industry in the Heart of Europe

International marketplace and forum for further education at the Amsterdam Exhibition Centre

The city's location, transport connections and charm speak for themselves. In August, Amsterdam will offer yet another reason for the promotional products industry to travel to the Dutch metropolis. proPSI will be held here from 25th to 27th August 2010. The trade fair for promotional products will be organised by Rexpro International Exhibitions GmbH, a cooperative venture of PSI organiser Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH, and Pro Exhibitions & Publishers B.V from the Netherlands.

For the industry, this autumn trade fair ideally complements the "big" PSI which is held at the beginning of each year in Düsseldorf. proPSI in Amsterdam will be particularly relevant for the important Christmas business. Another strong point of the trade fair is its European character. Out of the 110 exhibitors who have already booked their stands, almost 50 percent come from the Netherlands. The second biggest country in terms of origin is Germany, followed by the United Kingdom. Other exhibitors come from Belgium, Turkey, Poland or Spain, among others. Quite a strong point, according to PSI Director Michael Freter: "Distributors and manufacturers can strengthen their business relationships with other European countries. The Dutch market, in particular, has great potential for the industry." After all, it is the second biggest in Europe after Germany.

High-quality offers in the field of further education during the fair

It will not only be an international market place but a forum for further education as well: during the fair, proPSI offers its visitors a large number of seminars and lectures. These will start off with the proPSI Conference of the European Promotional Products Industry 2010, to be held on 24 August, one day before the trade fair opens, at the RAI Amsterdam. Under the theme of "Growth through knowledge: actively marketing promotional products", top representatives from the marketing and promotional products sector will discuss issues concerning the industry. The top speaker and absolute highlight here will be Dutch marketing expert Richard van Hooijdonk, who will conduct his "Marketing 2.0" power seminar at the conference. Participants are promised a "stirring" lecture. The agenda also lists further lectures from the fields of marketing, sales and distribution. An opportunity for participants to discuss these subjects in more detail will also be available during the closing social event. "The enthusiastic feedback from the participants at last year's premiere was a particular incentive for us, and we promise an even better conference programme this year", Michael Freter says. This being an exclusive event, the number of participants will be limited. Registrations will be taken by Daliborka Ergül, Project Manager PSI Conferences & Seminars, phone +49 211 90 191 337, Email Dali.Erguel@reedexpo.de. The participation fee is €249 (plus Dutch VAT). "Professional Members" of PSI will be given a €50 discount.

Joytex GmbH & Co KG is celebrating it's 25th anniversary

The company was founded back in 1985 by Hans-Jürgen Nienhaus (BBA) and was originally named, "Nienhaus Textile Promotion". Nowadays, the company is specialised in importing, printing and distributing bags for the promotional industry, covering the lower price levels. Joytex bags are often used as promotional gifts and for conferences, meetings, happenings etc.

Right from the start the company was asset-related to import and personalise textiles such as, t-shirts, towels, caps etc. for this particular section.

Sales and distribution were and shall only be realised through dealers and/or wholesalers of promotional items.

Due to healthy growth the company moved from Bocholt to Rhede. Property was found close to the city and after completion of the building in 1991, the road to further success was open. In due course of time the building was extended 3 times, the last extension in 2008 being the completion of a 900 m² warehouse. Joytex nowadays employs up to 40 people, of which almost half is part of the team for over 10 years.

The brand Joytex was born and patented back in 2000 and since then all of the company's products were distributed under that logo. "Nienhaus" was re-named Joytex GmbH & Co KG in 2006. Simultaneously it was decided to concentrate on promotional bags only and in due course of the past years, Joytex has become an institution for those looking for a vast offer in cotton, woven, non-woven and coated bags. Up to 1 million pieces per month leave our warehouse to places all around the world.

We are proud to serve many customers from "day one" and to work with some of our suppliers for over 15 years as well. Due to a steady and well contrived strategy the market position constantly increases, based also on a constant participation in national and international fairs.

In 2006 Mrs. Übbing-Mölders, the founder's daughter was appointed second in command, thus securing the company's future into the next generation.

Visit Joytex at proPSI - booth number 133

proPSI: unique event for promotional products industry in Europe

proPSI: unique event for promotional products industry in Europe proPSI is to be held in Amsterdam at the end of August, providing an ideal platform for the European promotional products industry just before the all-important last quarter of the year kicks off.

PSI (Reed Exhibitions) and Pro (Het Portaal Uitgevers, who were behind Pro8 and Pro9) are joining forces to organize the trade fair. That’s the reason for the new name: proPSI. The alliance between these two experienced exhibition organizers, each with their own extensive European network, means the event is now set to grow fast – with more exhibitors and more visitors.

Anyone who is active in the promotional products industry is welcome at proPSI. And that goes for manufacturers, suppliers and distributors. This show does not have a membership requirement. The trade fair’s timing – 25 to 27 August 2010 – and its choice of Amsterdam as a location are what make proPSI unique.

Michael Freter, general manager of PSI:
“This trade fair alliance creates a strong partnership of two companies which have one aim: to create a powerful trade fair at the heart of the market which offers ideal business opportunities to manufacturers and distributors all over Europe (...) As one of the major centres in the European promotional market, Amsterdam offers ideal conditions to achieve this. The same is true for the trade fair date at the end of August which, marking the opening of the Christmas business, is a favorite date for many European promotional products suppliers and distributors.”

Exhibitors will meet new distributors, and distributors will get to know new suppliers and see new products. All this in a relaxed environment with plenty of quiet corners for people to sit down, talk business, network or socialize. Knowledge transfer is an important part of proPSI. So during the 3 days of the show there will be a number of practical seminars and workshops, with free access for all. These are being held in cooperation with many of the organizations who support proPSI, such as national and European associations in the promotional products industry, including the EPPA.

Distributors: 7 reasons to visit proPSI!

Suppliers: 11 reasons to participate in proPSI!

(PSI and Pro have set up the joint venture Rexpro International Exhibitions GmbH)

10% of Distributors Ceased Trading in 2009

Last year the industry saw another dramatic increase in the failure of Distributor Companies, with Supplier Companies also feeling the pain. The recession has certainly bitten hard in the Promotional Merchandise Industry & the market size continues to fall.

Analysis of UK & Ireland Promotional Merchandise Industry in 2009

The overall Promotional Merchandise marketplace is now estimated to be worth £722million, this is significant reduction to the £1billion+ marketplace the industry had just two over years ago. The estimated market decrease of over thirty percent could indeed be higher, but most UK & Ireland companies do not publicly publish their revenue figures to enable exact figures to be analysed. This lack of growth in the marketplace will mean that most companies in the industry will continue to face major issues if revenues cannot be increased.

The UK & Ireland marketplace has over 2000 identified ‘Distributor’ Companies. A ‘Distributor’ is defined as a company who "has a dedicated focus to the sale of promotional merchandise". (This study does not include sales from Printers, Sales Promotion Agencies, the 'Premiums Market', the 'Incentives & Motivation Programme Market' or 'Direct Supplier Sales'.) Interestingly, only 119 Distributor Companies have a turnover in excess of £1m, however those same companies account for a significant forty five percent of the entire market spend.

Profile of Distributor Companies

Total Distributors in Market:

2,049

Number of Distributors in UK & Ireland Market.

Total Market Size:

£722,400,000

Turnover of Distributors in UK & Ireland Market.

Distributors Over £1m T/Over:

119

Number of Distributors in Market with Over £1m Turnover.

Distributors Over £1m T/Over:

£324,000,000

Value of Spend in Market by Distributors with Over £1m Turnover.

Distributors Over £1m T/Over:

44.9%

% of Total Market Spend by Distributors with Over £1m Turnover.

Between 2007 & 2008 the rate of companies ceasing to trade increased dramatically, with both Distributor & Supplier Company failures increasing by around one hundred percent. This dramatic new level did not drop between 2008 & 2009, indeed a further rise was experienced in both types of companies.

Most dramatic was the increase in Distributor Companies who ceased trading, which increased by another eighty percent on the previous year. In 2009, 181 Distributor Companies are known to have ceased trading, & this represented around ten percent of the entire market. The most high profile Distributor loss in 2009 was CMC, who had for many years been the third largest Distributor company in the UK. Whilst we can identify the companies reported, we believe that the true figure is likely to be higher, as many small companies can cease trading & then remerge as ‘Phoenix Companies’ without the knowledge of the majority of the trade. In 2010 we have already seen the loss of other major Distributor players, Non Stop Promotions & PPAG, both of which have left substantial debts for the Supplier’s to cope with. UKL Ltd, a major leisurewear clothing wholesaler, has also entered liquidation.

Supplier Companies are also suffering, and between 2007 & 2008 the rate of Supplier Companies who ceased trading dramatically increased by around one hundred percent. Between 2008 & 2009 the increase continued, albeit at around twenty five percent higher than the previous year. It appears that we lost around 53 Supplier Companies in 2009. The good news is that all of the high profile Supplier Companies have so far weathered the storm.

All indications point to 2010 remaining a difficult year in the UK & Ireland, particularly as the effects of the ‘double dip’ recession are still expected to hit later this year. As the overall market is not experiencing growth, companies in the industry can only experience growth by increasing market share, and doing so is critical for most companies, but of course there can only be a few winners in a contracting market place. Many companies have survived the past two years mainly by cutting, & closely managing costs. Should revenues continue to fall most companies have nothing left to ‘cut’, therefore any further cost cutting will have a direct effect on the businesses ability to create sales, maintain service levels or to invest in correct stocks. Cash of course remains the major danger for most companies & highly geared operations will have further hurdles to overcome due to the current reduction in the flow of money, plus expected interest rate increases anticipated for later this year. Every Distributor Company failure costs suppliers much needed cash & significant sums have already been lost by some. It is hard to see when the failure rate of companies in the industry will arrest.

Prominent observers indicate that the recovery of the UK economy may not be underway until 2012, which will be too late for some. Let’s hope that in next year’s market review will be able to report on the first signs of an earlier than anticipated recovery.

Source: www.sourcingcity.co.uk/

They are the ones, who in the number of nearly 9 thousand walked the halls of Expo Center for three days. Consistently for several years RemaDays have enjoyed a big hit/ have been very popular. Positive opinions that we hear from all the participants, reinforce us that RemaDays permanently rooted in the minds of customers. Today RemaDays brand is recognizable in the country and abroad. I am strongly convinced that it is an excellent tool for promoting Polish companies in the international arena - emphasizes Slawomir Giefing, president of GJC Inter Media, a company which organizes the fair.

The fair gives also opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions. During the three-day event apart from the negotiations and business meetings, also lectures and readings were held. Cezary Krolak, editor of TVN CNBC Biznes rightly summed up RemaDays 2010. The report "Reklama się dźwiga z kryzysu” ( Advertising is uplifiting in the face of crisis) which all we can see on the www.tvncnbc.pl website, says that a good mood in the advertising industry reflects good forecasts for the whole economy. He adds at the end that RemaDays is the perfect place to present ideas that can be used as a advertising medium, the medium that has not been found yet. And all on the very strong market of advertising services. is worth nearly 2 billion PLN.

During the fair, „Korony Reklamy” ( The Crowns of Advertising ) prizes were given.
Pro and PSI: Rexpro

Rexpro International Exhibitions GmbH is the organiser of the proPSI show. Rexpro International Exhibitions GmbH is a company of Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH and the Pro Exhibitions & Publishers B.V. The two leading brands in the promotional products sector will enhance and complement each other in the organisation of proPSI, the trade fair for European suppliers and distributors, to be held from 25 to 27 August 2010 in Amsterdam.

‘Amsterdam’ and ‘Düsseldorf’ will continue to coexist, with each trade fair retaining its own identity and structure. Pro will continue to be the trade fair for all suppliers and distributors in the products sector, while PSI will continue its concept with its membership. PSI Düsseldorf will continue to take place in mid-January and Pro in the last week of August in Amsterdam.

Philosophy unchanged
PSI is confident about the possibilities of the Pro concept, particularly due to its structure, the Amsterdam location and the time of year at which Pro takes place: at the beginning of the important fourth quarter in the product sectors. The PSI organisation sees Pro as a perfect complement to its own European activities and fully endorses Pro’s philosophy: no membership, low costs for participation and admission, broad structure, VIP lounge, the organisation of seminars for the transfer of knowledge, as well as conducting European research among suppliers, distributors and end customers.

Rapidly expand proPSI
Hans Janssen (Het Portaal): “Het Portaal Uitgevers has over 25 years of experience in the organisation of Dutch and international trade fairs, and the publication of trade journals and websites on promotional products. We are known for working on the basis of quality objectives with the aim of expanding knowledge. But we operate mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium. With Pro Exhibitions & Publishers, we were able to put Pro on the market within a space of two years. It is still a young brand, but with vast potential, primarily thanks to the fact that the Pro event brings together suppliers and distributors at the beginning of the most important sales quarter of the year.”

Crucial times of the year
“PSI holds the same opinion,” Janssen continues, “and wants to rapidly expand Pro further together with us. PSI has great access to the European market and has a European sales structure. Because PSI has been a major brand in the products sector for decades, it has built up a good network and trust in the market. Collaborating with the PSI organisation will enable proPSI to grow rapidly in terms of numbers of exhibitors and visitors. PSI and Pro provide the industry with two European trade fairs at crucial times of the year: one at the beginning of the new year and one to kick off the last quarter.”

Michael Freter (Managing director PSI) & John M Swaab (Het Portaal Uitgevers)

ABN AMRO Participaties and NIBC Capital Partners confirm their commitment to Mid Ocean Brands and strengthen capital base Mid Ocean Brands, a European leader in the premiums and business gift market headquartered in The Netherlands and Spain, has strengthened its position recently with the reinforcement of its capital base and the appointment of a new CEO.

ABN AMRO Participaties and NIBC Capital Partners, both already shareholders, have further strengthened the capital base of the company. Mid Ocean Brands is owned by both investors and the current management. By funding fresh capital, the shareholders have shown commitment to the company’s growth strategy.

Mid Ocean Brand now is ready to reap full benefits of future economic recovery. The European premiums and business gift sector has shown substantial growth in the 45 years Mid Ocean Brands has been leading the European market. The company is looking ahead with confidence, as it expects the European promotional product market to grow substantially once the economy recovers. Mid Ocean Brands is also focussing on growth in new markets in Eastern Europe and emerging markets worldwide.

The European market for premiums and business gifts, estimated at €8 billion, has been impacted the past year by the adverse economic climate, which brought a steady growth sales curve in Mid Ocean Brand to a halt. The company had to critically look at its organisation and resources and bring the number of employees in line with the current reality.

New Chief Executive
Willem van Walt Meijer (51), a seasoned business leader with vast experience in managing international companies such as Unilever and Friesland Foods, is the new Chief Executive of the company. Former directors Francesc Angelet has left Mid Ocean Brands and Jordi Cot will be leaving the company . Van Walt Meijer is looking ahead with confidence.

“The commitment of ABN AMRO Participaties and NIBC Capital Partners is proof of Mid Ocean Brands’ promising future and great abilities. I am impressed by the quality of the people and the entrepreneurial and creative spirit in Mid Ocean Brands. The strong ‘can do’ mentality has made this company what it is today: an industry leader with a great portfolio of appealing gifts and fantastic logistical capabilities. And a presence near our customers in over 30 countries across Europe and the rest of the world.”

About Mid Ocean Brands
Mid Ocean Brands is currently the 2nd largest company in Europe in Premiums and Business Gifts. The company was created in 2000 following the merger of three industry leaders in their respective countries. Dutch KCF (founded in 1964 by Chris Koppers), German Impex (founded in 1980 by Michael Fuchs) and Spanish ITD (founded in 1985 by Francesc Angelet and Jordi Cot).
Rutger de Planque to leave PF Concept International

Rutger de Planque is stepping down as CEO of PF Concept International from 1 February 2010. He will remain an active shareholder.

De Planque has been associated with the company since 1990. “After 20 years, I’ve decided to leave PF Concept International to do other things,” he says.

New CEO
De Planque: “PF Concept is embarking on a new adventure and deserves a new CEO to go with it, someone who will bring fresh perspectives and opportunities. But the existing culture, values and principles, plus the successful working methods we’ve developed over many years, will remain very much a part of our company. I’m absolutely convinced of that. PF Concept will continue to put all its efforts and passion into its most important task: serving our clients and safeguarding their interests.”

It was De Planque who made such a success of PF Concept International, particularly in the Netherlands. Some extraordinary marketing strategies – their brand policy for example – contributed to that success.

De Planque is giving no explanation for why he thinks this is the right time for him to leave. There has been some speculation, however, of a conflict of interest between chairman and CEO Philippe Varnier of Polyconcept (of which PF Concept International is a part) and Rutger de Planque.

Pro9 Show Success in Amsterdam

The Pro9 Exhibition attracted 4731 visitors over the 3 day show held at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam in late August 2009. Dutch visitors represented 68% of all visitors, with 32% of visitors coming from a variety of European countries. The show was held during a serious recession across Europe, yet the exhibitors & show organisers were pleased with the number of visitors who found the time to attend.

A major benefit expressed by a number of visitors, was that they were able to spend time with suppliers who were often too busy at the PSI Show. The British Pavilion organised by Sourcing City (Pro9‘s official UK partner) was supported by the BPMA & saw plenty of British visitors.

The participating UK supplier exhibitors generated over 1200 leads, and Windmill Promotions took 10 orders at the show alone. Tony Phillips of Great Central Plastics commented:

‘It was the most organized, stress free exhibition we have ever done. I was very impressed with the efforts Sourcing City went to make the show a success for the British exhibitors, and we will certainly be interested in exhibiting again.’

A number of the UK exhibitors were also able to get government funding through UK Trade & Investment. The BPMA are now forging ahead to become an ATO (Approved Trade Organisation), which could mean more grants would be available for exhibitors next year.

A useful service was also offered by Bowstring, who organised the management of transporting the stands and show stock to & from the show, which made things much easier for exhibitors. Alistair Mylchreest (CEO, Sourcing City) said:

“We had a significant attendance of British companies at the show & everyone certainly felt it was a great place to do business.”

The Pro Exhibition now looks a permanent fixture in the trade calendar, & there are not many better places to be than Amsterdam in the summer!

Most travel pillow solutions tend to only offer support for the neck and so still rely upon its user having to support the weight of their head which can be uncomfortable.

The natural tendency is to allow the head to fall to the left or right as we nod off in an aircraft, coach, bus, car or train.

With the 'Dreamflights Travel Pillow Headrest' it encourages the user to do just this which lends itself to the most comfortable sleeping position you can get whilst traveling.

Jet lag can be quite severe and something that we really would prefer to avoid, it actually takes the body one day per time zone that we cross to fully recover. After all if you are travelling on business you need to arrive fresh and ready for the heavy schedule, if you are on vacation, well you deserve every minute you can get right ?

This is why it is so important to actually minimise the affects jet lag has on us. This digital serving tray is designed to make doing the coffee rounds easier.
Gdock® - the eco-friendly desktop billboard

We all know that some marketing, promotion and junk mail are less than effective. To most people it's wasteful and annoying. What's more, it relies on a single 'hit' – the few fleeting seconds it takes for someone to glance at the message before dumping your expensive direct marketing or promotion into the bin. Now a Leeds business-woman has created something so appropriate to modern living that it will change the way people communicate important messages to an audience.

Gdock® is a new exciting 'green' advertising and communications system which functions as a phone and device stand, delivering powerful messages right to your target audiences’ desks.

Your message on their desk, guaranteed!
Entrepreneur and innovator Gwen Merkelbach, has already seen a great deal of interest, 'Marketers are increasingly aware of the difficulty of reaching busy decision-makers, buyers, clients, influencers… direct mail is simply binned and other promotional items rarely meet a real need and seldom offer the kind of large surface area that Gdock® does. ‘We have seen Gdocks deliver essential information right to the desks of staff, partners, clients, kids, students, memberships and the wider community.

’Ticks the GREEN box'
It is also a very eco-friendly way to deliver a message. Made in the UK, from recycled cardboard, the Gdock® is more sustainable and recyclable than other similar products. No packaging, just a simple envelope and you are ready to mail out.'

Be remembered when it matters
The Gdock® simply folds into a sturdy stand for viewing and finding those handy little gadgets, from phones, Blackberries, remote controls to IPods and PDAs. The real simple genius of Gdock® is its role as a clever, simple desk billboard with large area for your message - from advertising, brand recognition, membership communication, (environmental) reminders, fixture lists, mission statements, fixture lists, to awareness campaigns, SMS short codes and mobile marketing, – and those messages are seen many times during the day and for many months.

Visit Gdock Promotions Stand 643 - UK Pavilion next to BPMA.

Sourcing City on: The Promotional Merchandise Market (UK & Ireland)

The first six months of 2009 have been a difficult trading time for most companies in the UK & Ireland promotional merchandise industry. During the first half of the year 95 distributor companies have ceased trading (a few of which are now trading again under new names) & 26 supplier companies have also gone. Surprisingly, these figures are probably a bit less than expected.

From our market feedback, the size of a distributor company has no immunity from the dip in the market, although those dependent on a small group of customers, those with high overheads that cannot be easily cut, or those without sufficient reserves, are most vulnerable. All distributors appear to be experiencing a common trend of end users budget cutting, and a significant delay in the decision making for live projects. The repeat projects that are being placed appear to be being scaled down and pressure has yet again increased on pricing & lead times across the industry.

From the numerous conversations Sourcing City has had with UK & Ireland distributor companies we estimate that the home market is down by around 20%, & the figure could be as high as 30% for a significant number of companies. The largest, & one of the best companies in the industry; 4imprint Group, reported in June that the Sales in the End User Division (which includes Brand Addition) for the first half are expected to be around 24% below the prior year. Brand Addition have been particularly affected by the major cuts made by large corporate companies (the banking sector in particular). We understand a number of significant new client contracts have been won by Brand Addition, so recovery & future growth is fully expected. Sales from the 4imprint Trade Division are expected to be about 21% below first half 2008. In recent years the end user division of 4imprint have consistently produced impressive growth, but this certainly proves how tough it is out there when a high performing outfit like 4imprint are taking such a short-term hit. The word in the market is that the industry’s other major players would demonstrate a similar story.

Most companies in the industry seem to be surviving by cutting costs in overheads, expenses & unfortunately staffing. The danger in cutting costs indiscriminately can of course put yourself in a position to not be able to service existing customers sufficiently, which can cost market share. It can also leave companies with insufficient resource when the market recovery begins. Losing customers now is dangerous, whilst they may not be spending much, or indeed at all, losing touch with them, or servicing them poorly will almost certainly mean they will change supplier when the economy recovers. Indeed, some companies may now be losing some existing customers due to poor service, but may be blaming it on the market conditions incorrectly. Interestingly, some cuts companies have now made were in fact ‘good housekeeping’ & should have actually have been done in the ‘good times’. A lot of companies seem to have lost any interest in investment for the future at present, as survival has become the agenda of the day for many. Whether this proves a sound strategy we will see. Cutting waste spending is a necessary activity at all times, but there is a strong argument to invest now to increase market share, and/or to improve the efficiency of company systems which enable a company to service customers better. This would put a company in a strong position to defend their business, or indeed grow now, with the added benefit of being able to leap forward ahead of their competitors when the market turns. A major UK distributor experienced significant growth during the last recession in the early nineties, by proactively building relationships with new end user customers that were not being contacted by their ‘usual distributors’. Orders were gained at the time, although relatively small, but the real win was that they had substantial new customers when their budgets returned. Such a strategy needs sound budgeting & a strong nerve, but the rewards can be significant.

One segment of the market that appears to be faring better than most are the distributors with a high internet presence. The growth in this form of end user buying has consistently grown over recent years & appears to be holding up best.

In June one of the largest suppliers in the USA, Norwood Promotional Products, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, elements of the company are now being bought by BIC USA. The PPAI (USA Trade Association) have reported that the volume of USA business is down by around 7 percent, or about $1.34 billion less than the sales figure reported for 2007. (The PPAI survey was sent to 4073 USA distributor companies. The results were compiled from 362 USA distributor respondents – 8.89%) Based on the international reports relating to the overall US economy this feels a little understated, but we are of course not in a position to question their findings.

The good news is that the UK industry’s core supplier base is still pretty much intact, - at the moment. Yes, they are also feeling the downturn significantly, but we are pleased to see them surviving. Before the current recession hit us, a significant number of suppliers were already smarting from buying stocks with an unfavourable dollar rate. Since then, dollar & euro exchange rates worsened further early in the year, plus a number must be sitting on significant unsold stocks which is burning cash. The expectation was that this would lead to a number of company failures, but we are pleased to see this has not been the case, as yet.

Again, most suppliers seem to be surviving by cutting costs in overheads & staffing. This has been evident by a number of high calibre candidates being available in the market recently. June has seen an improvement in the dollar rate, which should help suppliers who have based selling prices on a less favourable buying rate. A threat still exists however for those who have now cut costs.

Most respected economists say we are in a ‘W Shaped’ recession & are moving into the first ‘up’. This is partly the result of companies who had substantially ‘destocked’, & who now need to replenish. This does not indicate recovery & will unfortunately be followed by another ‘drop’. It is likely to be 2012 before we see real recovery. If you hear of green shoots’ soon, it might be worth having a pinch of salt near to hand. The danger facing companies now is that if reduced, or falling, sales books continue to bring pressure to cash, & there are no further cost cuts that can be made to address the imbalance, significant problems may arise. Let’s hope the future is not a slow fuse burning for our suppliers.

The chart below shows the history of companies that have ceased trading in the promotional merchandise industry. Distributor closures are already 109% up on last year on a pro-rata basis. Supplier’s look more healthy on 23.8%, however for the reasons above this could be the calm before the storm.

2007

2008

2009
Half Year
To End of June

 2009
Pro-Rata

 Forecast Increase
on 2008

Distributors

49

91

95

190

108.80%

Suppliers

21

42

26

52

23.80%

All Companies

70

133

121

242

82.00%

Because of the delay in end user decision making, suppliers are being pressured to turn orders round in ever shortening lead times. Some have even reported that they are having to pay overtime to deliver as required, even though their order book is actually reduced.

It is understandable that a number of UK business leaders would consider a breakeven position for this year a satisfaction.

The press & some elements of government appear to be teasing UK industry with snippet stories of ‘green shoots’. Listening to respected independent economic commentators, the reality is that it will be into 2012 before any real recovery can be expected, & then it will be a slow burn. It looks like the ‘hatches will have to be battened down’ for a while yet, unless you are brave enough to invest for the future in key strategic areas now.

*Note: Sourcing City has constant contact with all areas of the marketplace & have complied this overview based on information gathered over the past months.

David Long Chairman
Sourcing City

Source: Sourcing City

Increase your selling power with Pro9!

Clients across Europe are more cautious this year in spending their marketing and communication budgets. Despite surveys indicating that their spending cuts on relationship marketing activities are relatively modest, in 2009 they will think twice before spending their money.

This makes it even more important for you to set yourself apart from your competitors. If you can surprise your clients with a good price or an original premium or business gift, you will have more selling power to retain existing turnover and attract new business!

Meet new suppliers
This is therefore a crucial time for you as a distributor to meet new suppliers who can provide you with (more) attractively priced products, entirely new and other products, or products with better margins for you. Grab this opportunity and meet those new suppliers at Pro9 held in Amsterdam in late August. Manufacturers and suppliers from all over Europe will be present at Pro9 waiting to meet you.

The start of the most critical season
Pro9 is the ultimate platform for suppliers and distributors from all over Europe. Pro9 will be held on 26, 27 and 28 August, immediately prior to the start of the year’s most critical quarter in the promotional products industry.

Suppliers exhibiting at Pro9 will have special year-end promotions, supporting sales promotions, new winter and Christmas catalogues as well as new (year-end) products. You can also use Pro9 as an opportunity to make agreements with them for the 2010 catalogues. In other words, late August is an ideal time for you to meet European suppliers. Pro9 exhibitors include generalists as well as specialists, such as Mid Ocean Brands, Antalis, Anda Western Europe, Keback, Protrade, Windmill Promotions and Pim Tekstil.

Pro9 welcomes everyone
Pro9 is not membership-based. You are welcome if you can demonstrate that you are professionally engaged in the promotional products industry. The 25 euro fee covers three days of admission to Pro9, including the practical workshops and seminars that will be organised.

Sixty-seven percent of all visitors from 15 different European countries met new suppliers during the first Pro exhibition (Pro8). More than 80f them indicated that they would definitely be doing business with those suppliers. More than 86esponded that they would definitely be attending Pro9. Visitors rated the first Pro exhibition with a 7.6 (on a scale of 1 to 10).

Attractive hotel rates
Pro9 will be held at the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition Centre, which is located only a 30-minute drive from Schiphol International Airport. From the RAI, it only takes 20 minutes to get to the centre of Amsterdam, which is a nice place to be, especially in late summer. Amsterdam has a huge hotel capacity and very attractive room rates are available during that period.

Increase your market opportunities and attend Pro9! Meet new suppliers. Talk to colleagues from all over Europe. The exhibition floor will have numerous lounge areas where you can exchange thoughts over a snack and a drink in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere.

Fairs in China: Huge dimensions, less visitors

The 105th edition of the “China Import and Export Fair“, more commonly referred to as the “Canton Fair“, had been awaited with suspense – the largest show in the world by far. As for the first time in autumn 2008, the Fair was staged exclusively in the Pazhou exhibition complex in three gigantic halls. The event was split up into three phases, each comprising of five exhibition days.

The exact official exhibitor and visitor figures were not available at the time of going to press. However, there were apparently less visitors than the organisers had hoped for. According to estimates from diverse exhibitors, on average the visitor frequency was 30% less than usual, indeed some people even talked about an even more drastic drop in the attendance figures.

The same seems to be true for the two Hong Kong shows. This year’s edition of the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair, the 24th to be exact was scheduled from April 27-30. The venue of the largest show of its kind – the organisers talk about „The world’s largest gift fair“ – was as usual the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). The show is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which was founded in 1966, and the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association. According to the official figures, 3,974 exhibitors from 38 countries and regions presented their products and services – a new exhibitor record. (In 2008, a total floor space of 78,496 m² was occupied by 3,909 exhibitors).

The Global Sources Gifts & Premiums China Sourcing Fair took place in Hong Kong at the AsiaWorld-Expo from April 28 – May 1. The fair is quite appropriately referred to by branch insiders as the “airport show“, since the train from the airport only takes a minute to reach the exhibition grounds. The show is organised by the company, Global Sources, which has four different pillars: Online, Magazine, Tradeshows and Research. The show celebrated its debut in the spring of 2006, although at the time it was still called Global Sources Gift & Home Products. The Home Products sector was split off this year.

Source: WA Verlag
